50 vehicles lost to fire at south Delhi malkhana

New Delhi: Several vehicles seized at a malkhana in south Delhi’s Nehru Place were gutted in a massive fire on Thursday, a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said.
According to DFS, the blaze erupted in a vehicle pit near MTNL office, where vehicles seized by Delhi Police were stored. DFS received a call about the fire at 2:02pm and dispatched five fire tenders with around 25 firefighters to the scene. “The fire started in one vehicle and quickly spread, engulfing nearly 50 vehicles, including cars, three-wheelers, and two-wheelers,” DFS official said. The malkhana where the fire erupted is an open area and no casualties were reported.
“Seized vehicles and their parts were kept there. Luckily, we were able to control the fire in time. The presence of flammable substances in the vehicles contributed to the rapid propagation of the flames,” the fire service official added.
Firefighters managed to douse the flames within two hours, though cooling operations continued afterward. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
In Aug last year, 280 vehicles were gutted at a police vehicle pit in northeast Delhi’s Wazirabad. tnn
