'Was shocked when I lifted the veil': Meerut man tricked into marrying 45-year-old woman instead of her 21-year-old daughter

SHAMLI: When 22-year-old Mohammad Azim from Meerut’s Brahmpuri arrived for his nikah ceremony last week, he believed he was about to marry a 21-year-old woman. But when he lifted the bride’s veil, he was shocked to find a 45-year-old widow, the mother of the woman he thought he was set to wed.
Azim told police that on March 31, his elder brother Nadeem and sister-in-law Shaida assured him that his marriage had been arranged with Shaida’s 21-year-old niece, Mantasha, a resident of Fazalpur in Kankerkhera.
However, during the ceremony, Azim grew suspicious when the maulvi announced the bride’s name as Tahira — Mantasha’s mother. “I was shocked when I lifted the veil and saw that the bride was not Mantasha, but her mother Tahira,” Azim told police.
He claimed that when he protested and refused to take the bride home, his brother and sister-in-law threatened to implicate him in a false rape case. Betrayed and fearing legal trouble, Azim returned home alone and approached the SSP office in Meerut on Thursday to file a complaint.
SSP Meerut Dr Vipin Tada said, “A complaint has been received regarding the matter. A thorough investigation will be conducted and necessary action will be taken based on the facts.” The case is currently under inquiry.
