NEW DELHI: Tires were hurled at the convoy of Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Ramjilal Suman at the Gabhana Toll Booth on the GT Road between Aligarh and Delhi on Sunday, allegedly by Karni Sena activists, police said. The attack caused a collision involving several vehicles that had slowed down at the toll plaza
Police forces were immediately deployed to the spot. “No one was hurt in the incident,” additional SP City MS Pathak confirmed. He said several protestors have been booked, and Suman was safely escorted away from the area.
According to police, Suman was travelling from Agra to Bulandshahr to visit Sohana village, where reports of atrocities against Dalits had recently emerged. However, after the toll booth incident, police stopped him from proceeding further into Bulandshahr and sent him back to Agra.
Suman accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order. “Law and order in the state has collapsed and this will continue until the government decides to take strict action against the perpetrators of such crimes,” he told reporters.
Following the incident, the inspector in charge of the Gabhana Toll Booth police outpost was suspended for negligence, police said in a statement.
Talking about the alleged attack on his convoy, Suman said, “An incident took place in Bulandshahr where people from a particular community were driving a car at high speed and killed a woman. As per the orders of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, we had a program to visit the place. We were not allowed to visit the place. On another side towards Aligarh, some people poured oil on the vehicles and attacked my convoy.”
‘Has the bulldozer lost its might?’
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav condemned what he called a “deadly attack” on Suman. In a post on X, Yadav questioned whether the Uttar Pradesh government had surrendered to lawlessness or was deliberately allowing such incidents. “Has the bulldozer lost its might or has the Uttar Pradesh government bowed before anarchy?” he said.
Yadav also alleged that no strict action was taken because Suman belongs to a marginalised community, calling the incident “highly condemnable.”
The tensions trace back to last month, when Karni Sena members announced revenge against Suman after a video surfaced showing him calling Rana Sanga a “traitor” for inviting Babur to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. Rana Sanga was the ruler of Mewar from 1508 to 1528.
The unrest follows violence in Bulandshahr’s Sohana village on April 21, where a woman was run over during a clash between two groups. Three others, all Dalits, were injured. Six people have been arrested, and the vehicle involved, a Mahindra Thar, was seized.
