Minor taking part in nat’l-level sport event sexually assaulted; 6 held

New Delhi: A 14-year-old boy from Uttarakhand, who travelled to Delhi to participate in a national-level sports event, was allegedly sexually assaulted and filmed by a group of boys at a water sports club in northwest Delhi, police said on Wednesday.
The minor boy arrived in Delhi on April 21 with his coach to take part in the National Dragon Boat Federation Cup, scheduled for April 22. Dragon boat racing is a team water sport which involves paddlers rowing a long, narrow boat in rhythm to a drumbeat.

According to police, a call was received on April 23 reporting that a minor boy was allegedly sexually assaulted. He is a national-level player and a resident of Uttarakhand, said police.
“The caller stated that her younger brother was stripped and assaulted on April 22. A police team was immediately dispatched to the water sports club in northwest Delhi, where the incident allegedly took place,” a senior officer said.
The caller introduced the police to her 14-year-old brother. After a preliminary inquiry, a Child Helpline (1098) counsellor was called in. The boy underwent counselling, and his statement was recorded.
“In his statement, the boy alleged that while the team members were in their rooms, one of the boys called him into a room. Another shut the door, and he was then taken to the bed by two others who held him down and forcibly removed his clothes. He alleged that he was subjected to multiple acts of physical and sexual assault by several individuals present in the room, while two others recorded the incident on video,” a senior police officer said.
Further medical examination was conducted, and police registered a case under sections 4, 8, and 17 of the Pocso Act. Police apprehended six individuals — an 18-year-old boy and five minors. Police said further investigation is underway.
