New Delhi: Water minister Parvesh Verma on Sunday ordered an investigation into the non-functional Timarpur oxidation ponds, stating that Rs 85 crore was spent without any water being treated.
Oxidation ponds are water bodies where wastewater is treated with algae and aerobic microorganisms under the action of aerobic and anaerobic processes.
After visiting the site, Verma said: “This is a living example of the corruption perpetrated by AAP’s govt. Around Rs 35-40 crore were spent just on grass and landscaping, and another Rs 45 crore on the construction of the ponds, totalling approximately Rs 85 crore.. The real question is where did all this money go.… The people of Delhi deserve answers, and a full investigation has been ordered.”
This project, once promoted as a sustainable solution to clean the Yamuna, has now turned into an environmental and financial failure. On-site engineers and officials admitted that the plan was not suitable for Delhi’s conditions, he said. “Crores were spent on the Timarpur oxidation pond, yet not a single drop of water has been treated to date. This reflects the AAP govt’s corrupt and irresponsible approach. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty,” the minister said.
He also mentioned that the project was based on outdated and obsolete technology and was started without any proper technical evaluation, clearly showing that it was launched to mislead people and benefit contractors and a corrupt system. Sources said the plant is likely to be shut down.
AAP responded to the minister’s words, saying that its govt “repeatedly raised concerns about the conduct of the then CEO of DJB, stating that he was creating obstacles and that his actions warranted a thorough probe.”
The party added: “However, he enjoyed close ties with BJP and the LG, and even today, he continues to be shielded by BJP.”
“We challenge BJP govt to initiate an independent enquiry into his various actions and decisions. But the truth is, BJP will never allow such an inquiry because this officer is deeply connected to their leadership,” AAP said.
The party said: “What Pravesh Verma is doing is nothing more than political theatre. The people of Delhi are watching closely and can clearly see through his daily antics.”
